Full ponds due to heavy rain in the spring and summer combined with recent heat have created the perfect recipe for algae to form in the water. Algae blooms will peak in late summer and early fall, presenting a deadly risk to your pets.
The onset of symptoms can be rapid, and in some cases fatal, within hours of exposure to affected water. Not all algae are toxic, so pet parents need not avoid water altogether. To keep pets safe around water, it is important to know the risks, symptoms, and what to do if pets are exposed.
Spot the Threat
Pet owners need to be aware it is a rare, but toxic, blue-green algae can lead to liver and/or neurological problems and ultimately death if ingested. In Indiana, my home state, we see about one case every year of a dog poisoned by this algae. In most cases, the impacts are not life-threatening, but some animals develop problems that can turn deadly.
Know the Symptoms
Depending on the type of toxins ingested, the health complications a dog might experience include:
- Vomiting
- Hypersalivation
- Lethargy
- Lack of appetite
- Tremors
- Seizures
What to Do
According to veterinarians, if a dog enjoys taking a swim in the water here is what pet parents should do:
- Look at the water - if you see any scum or algae on surrounding rocks, avoid letting your pet swim. When in doubt, stay out!
- After swimming, rinse pets off with fresh water to remove spores that could contain harmful bacteria.
- Consult a veterinarian immediately if pets begin exhibiting any of the symptoms above or other unusual behavior.
