Tips for Calming Your Pet During Fireworks

Independence Day is a fun summer holiday celebrated by lighting fireworks and barbecues. While this is an exciting holiday for most, some pets may be overwhelmed and experience anxiety and panic in response to loud sounds. Signs to look for in a distressed pet are trembling, shaking, shivering, howling, barking, and some may become frantic.

Sound Training
A great place to start with your pet is to introduce them to loud sounds and fireworks. Start by playing a video of firework sounds. As the video is playing, give your pet treats and toys so they associate the loud sounds with positive and fun things.

Exercise Your Pet
As the saying goes -- "a tired pet is a happy pet." Exercising your pet earlier in the day can help to tire them out. Wearing your pet out can help to ease anxiety and prevent them from becoming frantic when hearing the sounds of fireworks later in the evening.

White Noise
Turning on a radio, television or a loud fan will help to mask the sound of fireworks. Hearing familiar sounds and keeping them indoors can help your pet to relax.

Consider Anti-Anxiety Options
If these methods don't seem to work well for your pet, there are options such as over-the-counter medicines, prescription medications and calming treats.

Some options for calming treats are Durvet's Hemp Calming Soft Chews for cats and dogs and Durvet's CalmBalance EQ Gel for horses. Durvet's hemp chews are grain free and soy free with natural preservatives and flavors and help to calm your pet when they exhibit nervousness due to environmentally-induced stress. Durvet's CalmBalance EQ Gel supports stress management and optimizes relaxation in horses without causing drowsiness.

Comfort Your Pet
The best option, but not always the most reasonable, is to stay home with your pet. Ultimately, they will feel more relaxed, safe and happy with you by their side. If you aren't able to stay home, a good alternative is hiring a pet sitter.
