Miniature Livestock – Practical and Cute!

As the number of large farms and ranches have decreased in recent years, small hobby farms have risen in popularity. Miniature livestock presents the perfect solution for small farms with low acreage. If a farmer has limited pasture space to work with, miniature livestock is a great option.

Cows are herd animals that like companionship and thrive better in groups. Instead of placing one full-size bovine in that area, you can have a small herd of miniature bovine that would be more efficient. More cows in the pasture means higher yields for the farmer. There are many benefits to small livestock. They are less problematic on the land, equipment and fencing. They are relatively easy to handle, and can easily be moved from pasture to pasture.

Up front, miniature cows are more expensive than standard-size livestock. They can range anywhere from $1,800 to $3,500, depending on the size, color and markings. Although more expensive initially, they are more efficient because they require less feed, less land and they are easier to handle.

Many people raise miniature cows for meat, and others may raise them for dairy products. Miniature livestock is a great option for families producing meat and dairy for their own family. The average miniature dairy cow can produce between 2 to 4 gallons of milk per day, and the meat from one miniature cow is enough to fill a family's freezer.

Overall, miniature cows are less work than a standard cow. They eat and drink less, take up less space and are easier to handle. With miniature livestock, you can have the best of both worlds - easy to take care of while producing enough milk and meat for your family!
