Healthy Treats Your Chicken Will Love

Chickens are just like any other pet; they love occasional treats! Treating your flock to something tasty helps to add variation to their diet and will keep them happy and laying eggs. There are plenty of chicken treats on the market, but a lot of their favorite treats can be found right in your kitchen! This is a great way for chicken parents to make use of excess food while also spoiling their flock!

1. Frozen Corn Treats

For a quick and easy treat to beat the heat, fill a muffin tin with half corn kernel and half water. Freeze for a few hours and BOOM! You have yourself some tasty, frozen chicken pops that will help to keep your flock cool on a hot day.

2. Pumpkin

This idea is perfect for the fall season. If you have leftover pumpkins used for jack-o-lanterns or other decorations, they make a perfect and tasty snack for your chickens. Simply cut the pumpkin up into smaller chunks and the chickens will feast on everything, seeds and all!

3. Vegetables

Have leftover vegetables that are going to spoil before you can use them? Give them to your chickens! Make the vegetables into a string of vegetable garland for a way to keep them entertained!

4. Fruit

Did you know chickens enjoy fruit too? Some fruits that chickens enjoy are apples, bananas, cherries, melons, peaches, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cranberries and seedless grapes. Watermelon is a great option for your flock because not only is it tasty, but it will keep them hydrated and cool!

5. Mealworms

Mealworms are a great and relatively cheap snack option for your chickens. They are also packed with protein!

6. Eggshells

Yep, you read it right! Although it may seem odd to feed eggshells to a chicken, its a treat that they actually enjoy! The shells are packed full of calcium and are an easy and affordable snack for your flock.

7. Oatmeal

There are lots of homemade chicken treat recipes out there that call for rolled oats. Chickens will love anything with oats, but you can also prepare a regular packet of oatmeal for a warm treat on a cold day. You can top it with fruit to make it even more tasty!

8. Scrambled Eggs

This might feel even more odd than feeding eggshells to your chickens. Although it may seem odd, it is actually one of the best sources of protein you can give them! It's a great snack to consider for an extra boost in the fall when chickens are going through molting season.

9. Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese is an easy and tasty snack for chickens to ingest. Not only do they enjoy it, but it is loaded with calcium and protein and adds great benefits to your chicken's diet. Chickens also enjoy other types of dairy including all types of cheese and plain yogurt.

10. Table Scraps

If you have a healthy meal around the table and have leftovers, you can toss it to your chickens! They will enjoy the scraps and whatever they don't eat, they will grind into the soil and turn into compost.
