Goats are somewhat goofy animals known for their crazy eyes and their ability to eat or head butt just about anything in sight. But did you know they can also reap big benefits for landowners and farmers? Goatscaping isn't a new method, but it is becoming increasingly popular. If a property owner is looking to clear a large portion of land that is filled with pesky weeds and brush, consider hiring a herd of goats!
Goatscaping is great for clearing property through browsing, foraging and fertilizing. Goats have a tremendous appetite and will eat weeds, overgrown brush and even dangerous plants like poison ivy and poison sumac, which grow rapidly and can overtake a pasture in no time.
Goats can cover a decent amount of land in a short amount of time. 20 adult goats can clear a quarter acre of weeds and brush in just two or three days. Pretty impressive! Another benefit to goatscaping is that the animals naturally fertilize the soil and work it into the ground with their hooves. This helps to slow future weed growth.
Before releasing a herd of goats on your property, you should clear the land of potential hazards such as plastic, broken fencing, hunting traps, barbed wire, rusted metal, and glass. Some goats also may be startled by dogs or other animals, so be sure the goats have a safe and comfortable environment. If you have land that needs to be cleared, get with a local farmer in your area!
