With essential oils and diffusers rising in popularity, it has raised concerns about the risks to pets living in the home. Oils are extracted from plants and have a powerful fragrance. They can be used for cleaning, relaxation, health and other reasons. An easy way to release these oils into your home is using an oil diffuser - which can reduce anxiety, illness or help skin conditions. While many oils are beneficial to humans, they may be toxic to pets if they are used incorrectly.
Concentrated oils (100%) can cause health concerns in pets when used improperly. Symptoms may include loss of balance, depression and low body temperature. If essential oils are ingested, you may see vomiting, diarrhea or depression. Some oils may be more harmful than others depending on concentration levels and products they are mixed with. Due to the variation in formula of essential oils, you should avoid applying them directly to your pet and keep the oils/diffuser out of their reach.
Dogs have a stronger sense of smell than humans, so consider that if you diffuse or use oils in your home. Some oils are poisonous to dogs whether ingested by mouth or placed on skin. These oils are:
- Cinnamon
- Citrus
- Pennyroyal
- Peppermint
- Pine
- Sweet Birch
- Tea Tree
- Wintergreen
- Ylang Ylang
If you are thinking of using essential oils in your home, please consult your veterinarian for safe practices and appropriate dosages.
