What Pet Owners Need to Know About Ear Mites

Ear mites are tiny critters that can pose a major threat to your pet. They are tiny mites, barely visible to the human eye, that feed on the waxes and oils inside your pet's ear canal. Their presence causes itching, discomfort and a reddish-brown ear wax (or dirty, debris-filled ears). They are contagious and can spread to other pets in the home, so it is important to treat an ear mite infestation as soon as you notice the problem.

Symptoms of Ear Mites

The first symptom you may notice due to an ear mite infestation is increased itching and shaking of the head. They will also develop of dark, waxy brown discharge in the ear canal that looks similar to coffee grounds. If the infestation is severe, pets may have scabs, inflammation or hematomas on the ears and hair loss around the ears.

How Can I Prevent My Pet From Getting Ear Mites?

Ear mites are a very common problem among dogs and cats, particularly puppies and kittens. If you notice your pet scratching or shaking their head more than usual, you should check their ears for signs of debris. If you suspect there is an infestation, you should treat it as soon as possible.

Consult with your veterinarian for a diagnosis and treatment options. Ear mites are easily transmitted through social interaction, so check all other pets in contact to check for signs of an infestation.

How Are Ear Mites Treated?

Although some cases can be seen with the naked eye, other cases may require a diagnosis from a veterinarian. The first step of treatment will be a thorough ear cleaning for your pet. It will be followed with an approved ear mite treatment, such as No Bite™ Ear Mite & Tick Control.
