How to Make A Goat Kidding Kit

The first kidding season for Rose Rock Farms, owned by Brad and Jessica Lindenmayer, did not come without a few bumps. Education and preparedness go a long way! The Lindenmayer’s did their research, gathering content from scholarly and reputable sources and preparing their supplies ahead of the birthing season.

The Lindenmayer’s were equipped to handle the situations, no matter what life threw their way. Luckily, for the most part, their does and kids did very well on their own and only needed help a handful of times.

Ideally, to prepare for kidding season and the situations that arise, having a well-supplied kidding kit is best practice. A kidding kit is simply a tote or bucket filled with all the supplies needed to help does and kids during kidding season. Advanced prepping and quick access will ensure you will have all the tools necessary to deliver healthy and happy kids.

healthy and happy

You can buy a premade kidding kit from a store or put one together yourself. Either route, it is essential to double check that all items are included to be prepared for kidding season. Whether, the first kidding season or the tenth, preparing for kidding and emergencies cross-check against the supply list below:

This is only a suggested list, and might not be all-inclusive.

A well-stocked kit is a handy thing to have, but do not forget a few other items when it comes to kidding kits:

  • Emergency phone numbers: Veterinarian or essential phone numbers
  • Check the kit regularly for missing items
  • Check expiration dates and replace any used or out-of-date contents.

Take time to educate, understand the methods, and learn from your goats. Never forget, whether births go smooth, faced with challenges or successes you always take a lesson, learn from it and be a good steward to your goats.
