As a dealer you can still sell antibiotics, but only if your customers present a VFD or prescription. If you choose to sell products included in the GFI #213 list you will be subject to additional compliance obligations set forth by the CVM including, but not limited to, the following:

  • File a one-time notice with FDA of intent to distribute VFD drugs.
  • Notify FDA within 30 days of any change in ownership, business name, and/or address.
  • Fill a VFD order only if the VFD contains all required information.
  • Ensure the VFD drug or combination VFD drug complies with the terms of the VFD and is manufactured and labeled in conformity with the approved, conditionally approved, or indexed conditions of use for such drug.
  • Ensure all labeling and advertising displays this statement: “Caution: Federal law restricts medicated feed containing this veterinary feed directive (VFD) drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.”
  • Retain VFD orders for two years from the date of issuance.
  • Retain records of all medicated animal feed containing a VFD drug for 2 years.
  • Provide VFD orders for inspection by FDA.
  • Retain records of VFD manufacturing for 1 year.
  • Obtain an acknowledgment letter from the receiving distributor (consignee) before the feed is shipped; retain a copy of each consignee distributor’s acknowledgment letter for 2 years.

NGPs - Your Options In A Restricted Antibiotic Environment

Current research confirms natural growth promotion (NGP) practices offer good animal health and performance outcomes as efficaciously as antibiotics. NGPs include phytogenics (derived from herbs, spices and other plants), essential oils (concentrated forms of phytogenics), organic acid-based products, prebiotics and microbials, i.e., probiotics.
