The health benefits of the human-animal bond are well-documented. Dog owners tend to have lower blood pressure, healthier cardiovascular systems, less stress and fewer pounds, in part because they’re walking their pets. Dogs are great convalescent pals for patients recovering from surgeries or dealing with long-term illnesses. Dogs instinctively seem to know how to comfort folks suffering from depression or grieving from the loss of a loved one.

But did you know dogs can make you happy and keep you feeling good through natural chemical reactions that have nothing to do with their endearing personalities, loyalty and irresistible doggieness?

A study several years ago at the Life Sciences Research Institute/ Pretoria Technikon in South Africa found that petting a dog releases hormones like oxytocin and prolactin in humans.

4-H Clubs Make Farming Rocket Science

Maybe the tides – or should we say the amber waves of grain – are turning. After more than a decade of generally negative press from mainstream media, American agriculture (which accounts for about 20 percent of the entire U.S. economy) recently got a fair shake and a huge compliment from The Economist, one of the most influential magazines covering global economics and politics.

Writing under the pen name Lexington, columnist David Rennie, a Brit visiting the Nebraska State Fair in August, noted that before growing up to become farmers, a startling number of America’s rural kids are taught how to build rockets. “Every year rural skies fill with mini-missiles built by children,” he wrote. “All this tinkering and swooshing explains a lot about American farms.”
