Smartphone Technology Gets Horses Back On Their Legs Print E-mail

Horses usually doze off standing up, but when they do lay down for a snooze they tend to be heavy sleepers. Literally. If horses lie for extended periods of time, their bodyweight can flatten veins, cutting off blood flow to the muscles. Often when horses awake from a deep sleep, they are unable to stand. If they bolt or try too hard to get upright, they can injure themselves.

For veterinarians this size and weight issue presents special challenges as they try to minimize a horse’s movement in the recovery room after surgery. But smartphone technology is giving veterinarians and caretakers a leg up in getting horses safely standing again.

Researchers at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital attach motion sensors between the horse’s shoulder blades that record motion, vibration and impact data as the animal awakens.

Are Animal Health Care Costs Going Up? Print E-mail

Everyone is talking about the Affordable Care Act – better known as Obamacare – since federal and state operated insurance exchanges started enrolling health coverage seekers earlier this month. But little has been said about health care for some important members of the family – your pets. And you could be looking at higher animal health care costs as the ACA is launched in the coming months.

Here’s why. To help fund the health care law, legislators have included a federal excise tax of 2 to 3 percent on medical devices and supplies. While industry – not consumers – will be liable for this tax, surveys indicate more than half of the manufacturing companies plan to pass costs along to their customers. Many veterinarians say they can’t afford it, and are uncomfortable raising their fees. “I’m extremely concerned this is a hidden tax,” said veterinary practitioner Mike Hatcher, DVM, in an interview with CBS last March.
