Some might call it evolution. Consumer studies on the pet market are finding more men growing fonder of cats and taking them under their roofs and up on their laps. But the bond between these emerging kinder, gentler fellows and cats is more akin to a mutual movement back to roots.

When it comes down to it, cats and guys have always been natural matches for buddyhood. They share a lot of interests. Both crave meat and enjoy being on the prowl (hunting) for it. “Men still harbor an image of themselves as just a little bit feral, able to build a fire and trap some food,” says Peter Mandel, author of several children’s books and writer of articles in the Wall Street Journal for grownups. Cats can be arrogant, aloof and even disrespectful of their human caretakers. “Way down deep, we’re all motivated by the same urges. Cats have the courage to live by them,” said Jim Davis, creator of the Garfield comic strip. Perhaps that’s why guys grudgingly respect them.
